Salt Lake City is the largest city and capital of the State of Utah. It is located in the north-central part of the state and southeast of the Great Salt Lake for which the city was named. Other than the the area adjacent to the lake, Salt Lake City is surrounded by mountains: the Wasatch Mountains to the east, the Oquirrh Mountains to the west, and the Traverse Ridge to the south.

Salt Lake City was founded in 1847 by pioneers led by the Mormon prophet Brigham Young. By 1858 the city was the capital of the newly established Utah Territory, and retained its status when Utah became a state in 1896.

The economy of Salt Lake City was once based on its abundance of natural resources. Today, it is largely service-based with the major industries represented by the government, trade, transportation, and utilties. Due in large part to central location in the western US, Salt Lake City is often referred to as the Crossroads of the West.
